‘We’re not barbarians’: Stars take aim at ICE on the Grammys stage

0

Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar and British artist Olivia Dean were among the big winners at the politically charged Grammy ceremony, in which several winners used speeches to attack the immigration campaign in the US.

Billie Eilish shared anti-ICE messages on the platform.

Dean and Bad Bunny, while other stars also joined in. Justin and Hailey Bieber wore badges—all in protest of the increased presence of federal agents, particularly in Minneapolis, which has become a flashpoint city.

Wiping away tears as she took the stage to accept the Best New Artist award, Dean told the audience, “I guess I want to say that I’m here as the granddaughter of an immigrant… I’m a product of bravery and I think those people deserve to be celebrated.”

The 26-year-old enjoyed huge success last year following the release of her chart-topping smash hit, Man I Need, and now she has one of the “big four” Grammys – which also includes song, record and album of the year.

His sentiment was echoed by Eilish, who accepted the award for Song of the Year for Wildflowers.

“No one is illegal on stolen land,” Eilish said, standing on stage with her brother and collaborator, Finneas. The 24-year-old, who features the winning track on her album Hit Me Hard and Soft, encouraged individuals to persist in their protests.

“It’s really hard right now to know what to say and what to do, and I just, I feel really hopeful in this room, and I think we just need to keep fighting and speaking out and protesting, and our voices really matter, and people matter.”

Public backlash against the ICE operation, which is part of Donald Trump’s mass deportation initiative, has grown since a Border Patrol officer 37-year-old nurse Alex Pretty – just a few weeks later, Renee Good. He was shot and killed in his car less than a mile away.

Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny, whose Debbie Tire Mas Photos became the first Spanish-language album to be named Album of the Year, began his speech for the first award with the words “ICE OUT.”.

He added, “We are not savages, we are not animals, we are not aliens. We are humans and we are Americans.”

For the main award, he gave most of his speech in Spanish before saying in English that he wanted to dedicate the award “to all the people who had to leave their homeland, their country, to follow their dreams”.

Kendrick Lamar is also among the artists who created Grammy history.

saw the night Lamar became the most awarded hip-hop artist in Grammy history, with a total of five awards, including the final of the “Big Four” – Record of the Year for Luther, his song with SZA.

Stars including Bieber, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Tyler, the Creator, and Sabrina Carpenter performed during the show, as well as a medley of Dean and his fellow Best New Artist nominees.

Lady Gaga was among the winners of the night, taking home the awards for Best Pop Vocal Album as well as Best Dance Pop Recording for Mayhem and Best Remix Recording for Abracadabra and its Gesaffelstein Remix.

The pop vocal star became emotional as her win was announced and used her speech to support fellow female artists and other women in the industry.

She added, “I just want to say to women in music, I know sometimes when you’re in the studio with a bunch of people, it can be tough, so I urge you to always listen to yourself and always fight for your ideas, fight for your songs, and fight for yourself as a producer. Make sure you’re heard loudly, and thank you so much for supporting me.”

This Grammy Ceremony Was Less About Songs, More About Speeches

It was a night of anger erupting from the Grammy stage.

Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny was passionate about the immigration campaign in Minnesota, while British singer-songwriter Olivia Dean also used her Grammy win – her first – to make her point.

In the audience, stars including Justin and Hailey Bieber and Joni Mitchell took a slightly more subtle approach, wearing ICE Out badges.

Away from the anti-ICE protest, it was Bieber who delivered one of the night’s awkward moments – inexplicably removing his shorts and socks to perform Yukon from his album, Swag.

The ceremony also included a tribute performance to the late Ozzy Osbourne led by Post Malone – which was watched by the rocker’s wife, Sharon, and their children.

It was a star-studded show, but really, it felt less about the songs and more about the speeches. There is a lot of anger over America’s current stance on immigration, and celebrities are not holding back.

Another British victory was celebrated, along with a Cher medley.

Carpenter, Bieber, Sir Elton John, Bruno Mars and last year’s best new artist, Chappelle Rhone, were among the nominated stars who missed out on the award this year.

With over 90 awards handed out and only a few hours left to air, history was made before the television show had even started – Netflix mega-hit K-pop Demon Hunters’ Golden became the first K-pop song to win a Grammy.

And by taking home Best Pop Solo Performance for her hit song Messy, Lola Young ensured another big British win. It was televised – and Young maintained the spirit of the song as he told the crowd that he had “obviously” not prepared the speech and apologised for swearing.

Other British winners included FKA Twigs, who won Best Dance/Electronic Album for her record Caprisongs, and Cynthia Erivo, who won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for Defying Gravity, her duet with Wicked co-star Ariana Grande.

Elsewhere, Cher received a standing ovation when she picked up a Lifetime Achievement award and provided a moment of levity with a medley when she presented the Record of the Year award, which went to Lamar and SZA’s Luther – not, in fact, to the late Luther Vandross, as she appeared to say for the first time.

In fairness, the song does sample the late soul star’s 1982 version of If This World Were Mine, which featured Cheryl Lynn and Lamar and SZA sharing a laugh with Cher on stage.

“That’s what music is about,” he said. “Luther Vandross.”

During an emotional In the Memoriam section, artists including Post Malone and Slash performed War Pigs in tribute to heavy metal pioneer Ozzy Osbourne, who died last year. Lauryn Hill led her tribute to D’Angelo and Roberta Flack, joined by musicians including Jon Batiste and her Fugees bandmate, Wyclef Jean.

Earlier in the evening, British star Yungblud won Best Rock Performance for his cover of Black Sabbath’s Changes, which he performed at the band’s farewell show, Back to the Beginning, a few weeks before Osbourne’s death.

And director Steven Spielberg becomes the newest member of the select EGOT group – creatives who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony – after winning Best Musical Film for the musical by John Williams.

In a statement after the win he said, “Thank you to all the Grammy voters, whose recognition of John Williams’ music means so much to me.”

Four Britons die within four months after holidaying in Cape Verde. – UK News

0

Four Britons have died within four months.

after contracting stomach bugs while on holiday in Cape Verde, lawyers representing their families say.

Elena Walsh from Birmingham, Mark Ashley from Bedfordshire, Karen Pooley from Gloucestershire, and a 56-year-old man died after suffering severe gastric ailments while staying on an island nation off the coast of West Africa last year.

Law firm Irwin Mitchell is investigating their deaths, as well as the deaths of two other Britons who died while on holiday there from January 2023.

It says it is representing more than 1,500 people who have fallen ill after visiting Cape Verde.

Ms Walsh, 64, died in August last year after falling ill while staying at a resort on the island of Sal.

Mr. Ashley, who had diabetes but controlled it through medication, fell ill three days after his holiday in October of last year, with symptoms including stomach pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, and extreme lethargy.

His widow, Emma, told PA that her family were “completely shocked” by his death.

“We went to Cape Verde hoping for a break, but Mark became terribly ill and never recovered,” he said.

Ms Ashley says she booked her trip with Tui, which cost more than £3,000.

She first reported her husband’s illness on 9 October, but his symptoms continued for some time after their return to the UK.

On November 12, Mr Ashley collapsed at his home in Houghton Regis and was pronounced dead in hospital a few minutes later.

In October last year, Ms Polley, 64, booked a two-week holiday through Tui at a cost exceeding £3,000.

Four days into the journey, she fell ill with gastric symptoms and slipped on water leaking from the fridge while going to the bathroom early the next morning.

Her lawyers say she was taken to Tenerife for urgent care on 16 October and died the next day.

Her husband Andy told the Press Association that his wife appeared to be in “quite distress” when her family video-called him from home and claimed communication from both the clinic and the leisure provider was poor.

“We were desperate for an update as Karen’s condition worsened,” he said.

“We are devastated and struggle to understand how she went on holiday and never came home.”

The sister of the Briton says that she was trying to save her friend when both of them died in Portugal.
The tourists, having contracted the disease, left after receiving a drip.

Irwin Mitchell says Ms Polly’s preliminary death certificate from Cape Verde authorities shows that she died of multiple organ failure, sepsis, cardio-respiratory arrest and a broken left leg.

The two other Britons who have died while holidaying in Cape Verde since 2023 are Jane Pressley, who died aged 62 in January 2023 after falling ill during her holiday the previous November, and a man aged 60 who died in November 2024 after suffering from gastric illness after a visit to the island country.

personal injury claim

All six of the victims’ families are filing personal injury claims against Tui for damages.

Irwin Mitchell serious injury lawyer Jatinder Paul says, “The number of people coming to Cape Verde on holiday suffering serious and debilitating gastric illnesses is truly staggering. Nothing brings the seriousness of this condition more into focus than these recent deaths.”

“In my experience, I am accustomed to supporting vacationers who fall ill at resorts around the world, but I have never seen repeated and persistent disease outbreaks on such a large scale over such a period of time at the same resorts.”

He added, “Clearly, those we represent have serious concerns about sanitary standards in Cape Verde. While what happened cannot be compensated for, we are committed to at least helping to establish the answers they deserve.”

The law firm has called on tour operators to work with local authorities to ensure that the highest hygiene and safety standards are always maintained.

Tui is investigating the claims

A Tui spokesperson says it is thoroughly investigating the claims being made and ensuring any customers who fall ill during the holidays receive appropriate care and support.

Vacation providers say sometimes people who fall ill don’t report illness or seek help during their stay, limiting the care they can provide.

Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son arrested for alleged assault ahead of trial on rape charges

6

Oslo, Norway – The eldest son of the Norwegian princess has been arrested just before the start of her trial on allegations including rape. Police said on Monday that this is a case which has been an embarrassment to the royal family.

Marius Borg Hoiby was arrested Sunday evening on new charges of assault, threatening with a knife and violating a restraining order, police said in a statement. He requested four weeks’ custody on the grounds of risk of re-offending. His lawyers could not immediately be reached for comment.

Hoibi was due to stand trial in Oslo District Court on Tuesday. The indictment includes 38 counts, including rape, abuse in an intimate relationship against a former partner, acts of violence against another and the the transportation of 7.7 pounds of marijuana. Other charges include making death threats and traffic violations.

Hoebi has been under investigation after being repeatedly arrested on various allegations of wrongdoing in 2024. He was convicted in August but freed pending trial on Sunday.

is the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship. He is the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, the heir to the throne, but has no royal title or official duties.

Marius Borg Hoiby sits next to his mother, Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit, in a photo taken in Oslo, Norway, on June 16, 2022.

The indictment focuses on four alleged rapes between 2018 and November 2024; alleged violence and threats against a former partner between summer 2022 and autumn 2023; and violation of a restraining order as well as two alleged acts of violence against the latter’s partner.

Hoeby’s defence team has stated that he “denies all allegations of sexual abuse, as well as most of the allegations related to violence.”

Haakon said last week that he and Mette-Marit did not plan to appear in court and that the royal house had no intention of commenting during the proceedings.

He stressed that Høiby is not part of the royal household and, as a citizen of Norway, has the same responsibilities and rights as everyone else. He said he was confident that all the parties concerned would make the hearing as orderly, fair, and impartial as possible.

While the royals are generally popular in Norway, the Hoiby case has cast a shadow over their image. And the trial begins just as her mother faces renewed scrutiny over her contacts with Jeffrey Epstein.

The Epstein files mention Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway.

Friday’s latest batch of documents from the Epstein files was released. An unflattering spotlight shone on Mette-Marit. Norwegian media reported that they contained several hundred mentions of the Crown Princess, who had already said in 2019 that she regretted having contact with Epstein.

Newly released documents, which include email exchanges with Epstein, revealed that Mette-Marit borrowed one of Epstein’s properties in Palm Beach, Florida, for several days in early 2013, and the royal house confirmed she did so through a mutual friend, broadcaster NRK reported.

In a statement emailed by the royal household, Mette-Marit said, “She must take responsibility for not investigating Epstein’s background more thoroughly and for not realising sooner what kind of person he was.”

He said, “I deeply regret it, and it is a responsibility I must live up to. I used poor judgement and regret having any contact with Epstein.” “It’s absolutely shameful.”

He expressed his “deepest sympathy and solidarity” with the victims of Epstein’s abuse.

Iran summons ambassadors in protest over listing of Revolutionary Guard as terrorist group

0

On Monday, Iran announced that it had summoned all EU ambassadors to the Islamic Republic to protest the designation of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group.

Iran has taken this step in response to the threat of US military action. This action has been taken in response to the killing and potential mass executions of peaceful protesters. The US Army is gone, leaving the USS Abraham Lincoln and several guided-missile destroyers in the Middle East. It is not clear whether President Donald Trump will decide to use force, although regional countries are engaged in diplomacy in an attempt to prevent a new Middle East war.

Iran’s mass killing of protesters

“Trump is trying to punish Iranian leaders in response to Iran’s mass killing of protesters without entangling the United States in a new, open conflict in the region,” the New York-based Soufan Center think tank said on Monday.

“Some of Trump’s allies want to take advantage of Tehran’s weakness to extract major concessions from the regime, but Trump has set conditions for a diplomatic solution that Tehran cannot accept.”

The EU agreed to list the Guard as a terrorist group. Last week it had a role in a bloody crackdown on nationwide protests in January, which left thousands dead and thousands more detained.

Other countries, including the USA and Canada, have previously designated the Guard as a terrorist organization. Although the move is largely symbolic, it increases economic pressure on Iran, especially as the Guard has a major impact on the country’s economy.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai told reporters that the summoning of ambassadors had started on Sunday and the process continued on Monday.

“A series of actions were reviewed; various options are being prepared and sent to the relevant decision-making bodies,” Baghai said. “We think that in the coming days, a decision will be made about reciprocal actions by the Islamic Republic of Iran toward the EU’s illegal, unfair and very wrong move.”

Iran’s Parliament Speaker also said this on Sunday: the Islamic Republic now accepts all EU forces. The speaker cited the 2019 law as evidence.

The guard came out of Iran’s Islamic Revolution of 1979 as a force whose purpose was to protect the Shia cleric-supervised government and was later incorporated into its constitution. Operating in parallel to the country’s regular armed forces, it grew to prominence and power during the long and disastrous war with Iraq in the 1980s. Although it faced potential dissolution after the war, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave it powers to expand into private enterprise, allowing it to flourish.

The Guard’s Basij forces were likely instrumental in quashing demonstrations that began on January 8, when authorities cut off internet and international telephone calls in the country of 85 million people. In the videos that have emerged from Iran through Starlink satellite dishes and other means, people possibly associated with the Iranian army are seen shooting at protesters and beating them.

Baghai also mentioned the guards of the Strait of Hormuz conducting a drill. One-fifth of all oil trade passes through the narrow estuary of the Persian Gulf, which is “running on its own timetable”. Iran warned the ships last week that an exercise would be conducted on Sunday and Monday, but it had not confirmed it would happen before Baghai’s comments. The US military’s Central Command issued a stern warning to Iran not to harass its warships and aircraft or disrupt commercial ships passing through the strait.

Satellite images taken Sunday by Planet Labs PBC and analyzed by The Associated Press show small vessels moving fast in the strait between Iran’s Qeshm and Hengam islands, just a short distance from the commercial shipping corridor. The Guard relies on a fleet of small, fast-attack ships in the strait.

Asked whether Iran might face war, Baghai told the public, “Don’t worry at all.” However, he declined to discuss whether Trump has set any deadline for Iran to respond to US demands.

NASA teams continue the countdown to the Artemis II wet dress rehearsal, a full-fuel test of the Space Launch System rocket, at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Overnight, engineers monitored the system as temperatures dropped and winds remained strong at the launch site.

This morning, at approximately L-39 hours and 30 minutes, the rocket’s core stage was fired.

In the coming hours, it is expected to be loaded with more than 700,000 gallons of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen during the tanking phase.

The process begins slowly, with the tanks filled, topped up, and then refilled as needed.

The interim cryogenic propulsion stage operated overnight, while the Orion spacecraft operated for several days due to colder than normal conditions in Florida.

Live coverage during NASA Artemis 2nd wet dress rehearsal

Engineers are preparing to charge Orion’s flight batteries and are ready to begin charging the core stage batteries as well.

Later in the day, teams will perform final work on the umbilical arms and conduct a walkdown on the launch pad.

Live video stream of the rocket on the pad running continuously on NASA’s YouTube channel; NASA is planning a separate feed during refuelling operations.

Real-time blog updates are also expected throughout the trial.

NASA’s official Artemis II status update has provided the information so far.

Includes countdown timeline simulated launch window

The countdown clock started at 8:13 pm Eastern Standard Time, which corresponds to 6:43 am Indian Standard Time.

This marked L-48 hours and 40 minutes ahead of the simulated launch window opening at 9 pm EST on Monday, February 2, or 7:30 am IST on Tuesday, February 3.

Rehearsals are expected to continue until around 1 am EST on February 3, which is 11:30 am IST. NASA’s countdown follows a structure built around both “L minus” and “T minus” times.

The L-minus tracks the time remaining until liftoff, while the T-minus tracks the sequence of events before launch.

Teams can pause the clock to manage tasks or align with a goal window.

During those holds, the T-minus clock stops, while the L-minus keeps running.

As part of rehearsals, teams will pause briefly at T-1 minutes and 30 seconds, restart the count, then pause again at T-33 seconds.

The clock will then be recycled back to T-10 minutes for a second terminal countdown, which will once again end at T-33 seconds.

The sequence is designed to reflect actual launch conditions, including situations where the launch may be delayed or scrubbed.

Once testing is finished, propellants will be removed from the rocket, and engineers will review the data before setting a formal launch target.

Artemis II crew milestone practice conducted without astronauts present

The Artemis II crew itself is not participating in the wet dress rehearsal, but crew-related milestones are still included in the timeline.

The Artemis closeout crew will practice launch-day procedures, including sealing the Orion crew module and closing the launch abort system hatch, as preparations continue for NASA’s first crewed Artemis mission around the Moon.

Suffolk Strangler: Key moments in the case of the Victoria Hall killer

3

The murder of Victoria Hall remained unsolved for more than a quarter of a century before Suffolk strangler Steve Wright finally confessed to his crime.

Wright, now 67, was due to stand trial at the Old Bailey over the murder of a 17-year-old boy.

But the killer dramatically changed his plea on Monday and admitted kidnapping and murdering Victoria “by force or fraud” on September 19, 1999.

Former merchant seaman Wright is being held in Category A HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire.

Seven years after Victoria’s murder, he is already serving a life sentence for the murders of five women.

This is how the incident unfolded.

DUBLIN RACING FESTIVAL: Romeo Coolio defies Irish Arkele Karges in thrilling Irish race at Leopardstown | Racing news

0

Romeo Coolio was too much for the brave Curges in the 2026 edition of the Irish Arkle at Leopardstown.

Gordon Elliott’s 4-9 favourite was one of only three horses in the two-mile-a-furlong Grade One event, where outsider Downmexicoway was isolated from the early stages.

The race effectively became a match between the market leader, Romeo Coolio, and the Willie Mullins-trained mare, Curges. Romeo Coolio eventually took the lead with Jack Kennedy riding, but Curges rallied under Paul Townend and closed in at the finish, which came half a length too early for him.

“They ran well; the pedals never fell off. They went very fast,” said Elliott.

“We needed every bit of the lad’s trip, he was flat. The horse was with us. He made a few mistakes, but he’s very brave and he digs deep. He pulled up when he got to the front and I was thrilled when the line came.

“It will be fascinating to see what Jack says. I’d say Jack might have been a bit lazy; he thought he was home and hosed. He should have gone, but luckily we held on.

“They are great sons and big supporters of Culantra. This horse was bought to stay; we expect him to go all the way.”

Romeo Coolio was moved from 7-2 to 5-1 for Cheltenham’s Arkle and on future plans.

Elliott added: “I wouldn’t be shocked to see him go out on the trip now.” He’s won three Grade Ones now, so everything else is a bonus. The lads are from the UK so they’re very keen to run Cheltenham.

“He’ll be in both races (Arkell and Brown advisory) and we’ll make up our minds at that point, which is the right race to go for.”

KDTA Racing owner Dave Rabson added: “He’s shown his bottle again. If you watch the two races here and Christmas, right after the second-last, you’re going, ‘We’re in a bit of trouble here,’ and then he’ll show you what he’s got.

“Three Grade Ones this year; he’s a decent horse now. That’s why we bought him, to get over the right fences, for the big day, for Grade Ones, and the boss gave us three. He’s probably level with me for this year!

“We’ll sit down. Dave (Page), Mouse (O’Ryan) and I will give our opinions and then Gordon will tell us what we’re doing!”

Kennedy told RTE2: “We ran very strong. My son’s jumping was incredible up until the back ditch and he only made two small mistakes. From that point on, I found myself under constant pressure. I think his stamina went down at the end and he probably got a bit lonely at the front. He should be treated fairly and toughly.

“He has the heart of a lion; he’s very tough.”

Narciso prevailed for Grade One honours.

Narciso advanced his promising early career by winning the Gannon’s City Recovery & Recycling Services Juvenile Hurdle.

The Willie Mullins-trained four-year-old Mark Walsh was ridden as the even-money favourite for owner JP McManus and was always at the front in the two-mile Grade One.

He took a considerable lead as the field approached the closing stages and was in no danger of being caught, securing a four-and-a-half-length victory from stablemate Selma de Vary.

“It was a very nice performance; he did it the hard way from the front,” Mullins said.

“He settles nicely in front, jumps well in front and has enough for a kick at the end.

“He’s matured and looking at him, I think he’ll make a nice chaser. He’s a fine, big specimen of a horse.

“I loved him from the day he came. He was very green the first day he ran, but he’s learning all the time.

“He has prickled both ears from the start.” He seems well within himself and able to handle himself.”

Bookmakers have made Narciso Haze their 7-4 favourite for the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham in March, with Selma de Vary nearly halved to 7-1 for the same race. Of the runner-up, Mullins said, “He’s missed a lot of time and I think he’ll improve a bit for that run.”

“He was a little bit green to the end. Paul brought him wide; he did not want to be involved with others.

“I think he’s a filly that has a big future. He looked pretty hot and that’s why we got him off the back. I’m not sure if flat racing will enhance his ability at all. We’ll see; we’ll get through the season first.

“Helooks like one for the Triumph as well and then maybe back at Punchestown. We could also go for a race at Fairyhouse; we’ll see.”

Dr Steinberg is very good

Dr Steinberg maintained his perfect record over hurdles with a comprehensive win in the Nathaniel Lacy & Partners Solicitors Novice Hurdle.

The Willie Mullins-trained Dr Dino gelding, who was responsible for subsequent Grade Two winner Thedeviluno, again, demonstrated his preference for hurdles by galloping home eight lengths clear of Paul Townend, following wins at Galway and Navan.

Yeshil ran early but took the 7-4 favourite, running two out and quickly falling to bed, with Kazansky in second.

“It was very impressive on that ground; it’s very hard,” Mullins said. “Every time we’ve been on the trip, he seems to love it. He is riding the Cyborg horse, which requires a lot of stamina.

“I think we bought two from Walter [Connors] that year, Kopec des Bordes and this dude, so it’s a 100 per cent record in grade one, which is great.”

“It was probably the first time he was going to the end before he relaxed. Everywhere he went,, he had a horse on his back and he was very free, but he kept running. The fact that it could pull like that and still run at the end of two miles and six on very hard ground.

“We thought he was a summer horse at first so he goes on all kinds of ground, but he seems better when he has the hard conditions.”

Doctor Steinberg has been shortened to 2-1 favourite for the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and Mullins added, “He does everything right.”

A woman has been accused of cutting off her partner’s penis and stabbing him to death – before her terrified daughter could scream five words as a patrol car arrived at the gruesome murder scene.

The suspect is a 55-year-old Venezuelan woman named Maria, who was in a relationship with the victim, 67-year-old Luis M., for about five years.

Despite being born in Portugal, Luis lived most of his life in Bilbao, Spain, where he shared a flat with Maria.

However, the apartment in the Uribarri neighborhood became a horrific crime scene on Friday, January 30, when Luis “suffered a violent death,” according to a press release from the security department. The statement said: “Police in Ertzantza went to a house in the Uribarri neighborhood of Bilbao after receiving reports of a suspicious murder.”

Maria, who has two daughters in their 20s, reportedly confessed to the murder when police arrived, according to reports in Spain. It was Maria’s daughter who called for help after her mother reportedly told her what had happened in the early morning.

And when the first patrol car appeared, the young woman, who was reportedly fond of Lewis, apparently screamed across the street: “My mother killed my father!”

Officers were said to have found Lewis’ body inside with multiple stab wounds to his neck and other parts of his body. Her genitals were also cut off and reports from Spain revealed that the couple were sailing out of jealousy.

The suspect was taken away in handcuffs and shown wearing a maroon jacket before being taken to Ibarekolanda Police Station for questioning.

A murder investigation was launched and neighbours in the flats above and below the couple confirmed that they had heard screams coming from the house.

The victim’s body was seen leaving the house around noon before being taken to the Bilbao courthouse for post-mortem.

Lewis, who reportedly has three sons and several grandchildren, owned a bar in the area, according to Leidy, a bakery owner and friend of the couple. El Diario Vasco: “I’m in shock. We were surprised by this, especially how it happened.”

“When I left work, I’d always have a beer or a glass of Moscato with him on the terrace. They’d talk, they’d laugh. There’s got to be more to it.”

Meanwhile a taxi driver in the area said: “No one knows what goes on inside people’s homes. They seemed like a normal couple, not toxic at all. He appeared to be a different man who gets along well with a new woman.

“We’re surprised. Nobody saw this coming.”

Yesterday (February 1) it was reported that Maria is now hospitalised with cuts and minor bruises, which have been attributed to Louis’ resistance during the suspected knife attack.

A duty judge reportedly visited Maria in hospital to take a statement before agreeing to provisional imprisonment without bail. Investigation is ongoing.

A former TikTok employee accused the company of bullying, harassing, and breaking the union. Science, climate and technology news

0

“There were numerous instances of bullying, harassment, and expulsion from both teams and projects.” There were many things going on.”

For the first time, former TikTok employee Linda Auzer is speaking out to expose an environment of bullying, harassment, and union busting at one of the world’s largest social media companies.

“I was having a hard time sleeping at night; I had flashbacks, felt tired, and lost motivation,” she tells Sky News.

Along with three of her former colleagues, she is now launching legal action against TikTok. This is the second court case that former UK employees of the video app have faced in recent months.

Linda began her tenure at the company as a moderator and later transitioned to a quality control role, overseeing the work of external agency moderators.

According to its latest transparency report, TikTok removes over 99% of harmful content before it is reported

At first, he enjoyed the work and found it rewarding.

However, she was later assigned to a workflow that handled some of the most extreme content posted on TikTok.

“You don’t want to see children being sexually abused; you don’t want to see women going through all kinds of abuse; you don’t want to see people harming themselves […] using abusive words throughout the day.”

“It made an impact on me.”

Linda says that, despite the type of content she was seeing daily, there was not enough support in place to keep moderators safe and ensure they could effectively moderate TikTok’s content.

TikTok asks moderators to take breaks.

TikTok provides breaks when needed and also offers a mental health support forum.

But Linda and other moderators at Sky News recently spoke to say that, in practice, they did not feel supported.

Instead, they felt pressure to work faster and harder, no matter how disturbing the material was.

AI monitors you all day long, she asserts.

Other moderators at the company have already told Sky News about allegations that they are under constant surveillance and feel pressured.

Linda says, “Moderators feel pressured to deliver, so they have to step up, even if you see something that really moves you and you feel like you’ve got tears in your eyes.”

“Sometimes you cry but then you continue to work because you have to reach those goals. If you don’t, it will impact not only your bonus but also your job security and salary.

She says that pressure has a direct impact on the safety of the user.

When you make mistakes and your speed is off under pressure, it means that things that shouldn’t be on the platform are still there.

“It’s not good for the moderators; it’s not good for the users of the platform.”

According to its latest transparency report, TikTok eliminates over 99% of harmful content before users even report it.

According to data collected for the EU’s Digital Services Act, it has the lowest error rate and highest accuracy rate among all major social media platforms.

After two years at TikTok, Linda joined the United Tech and Allied Workers (UTAW) union and became a union representative. She started to experience bullying and harassment, which she attributed to her union membership.

“It took me a few months to recognise this pattern.”

She says that, as well as facing ostracism and bullying, her performance was downgraded from the highest possible rating to the lowest—but even after she lodged a complaint, she was not given a proper explanation as to why.

“Other employees who previously had no problems reported that I helped recruit people to become members of the union, and then I started experiencing the same pattern myself.”

TikTok whistleblowers highlight security concerns

When TikTok launched a major restructuring program last year to change the way it moderates content, Linda’s team were told they were at risk. Of the 24 people at risk of redundancy, 11 lost their jobs.

According to the lawsuit, all of them were openly involved in union activity on TikTok.

Stella Carrom, head of legal at Foxglove, is helping represent the former employees in the legal case.

“In this case specifically, we want compensation for the workers. They have been unlawfully dismissed because they were involved in union activities,” he told Sky News.

“We wanted to make the situation an example because we’ve seen a lot of this happen around the world.”

TikTok told Sky News: “We strongly reject these baseless and false claims.

“We have made continuous improvements to our security technologies and content moderation, as evidenced by the record rate of infringing content removed by automated technology (91%) and the record amount of infringing content removed in less than 24 hours (95%).”

UTAW’s Eleanor Payne said: “TikTok workers in London have been unionizing for three years and aren’t going to stop.

“TikTok has once again been caught using unlawful redundancies in a futile attempt to prevent workers from unionising for a stronger voice at work.

TikTok can play union-busting whack-a-mole all it wants, but ultimately, it’s a losing game. UTAW members know that by remaining united they will ultimately prevail.”

Crisis in the British Army: court-martial of more than 300 soldiers on charges of misconduct. UK | news

Shocking new figures reveal that more than 300 instructors at British army training establishments have been court-martialed or faced serious disciplinary action over abuse of recruits, theft and drug abuse. The figures have been released in a Freedom of Information (FOI) request mail on Sunday, showing how soldiers tasked with training new soldiers have been accused of violence and disgusting initiation ceremonies.

Recruits to the British Army may be under the age of 16, meaning they are classified as children during training, with trainers often selected for the role due to their experience and ability. However, statistics detail serious cases of abuse, including kicking, punching, verbal molestation and child pornography. Most of the crimes are understood to have taken place at the Army Foundation College Harrogate, where 16-year-old recruits are trained.

Offences have also been recorded between 2015 and 2025 at other sites, including Army Training Center Pirbright, Army Training Regiment Winchester and Infantry Training Center Catterick.

A former senior officer has described this revelation as ‘disgusting’.

Former army colonel and intelligence officer Philip Ingram told the Mail on Sunday: “These figures show that systemic abuse of recruits has been going on for many years, and it is disgusting.

“The Army keeps saying that they have dealt with inappropriate practices across all services, but the reality tells a different story.

“It’s time for the military to stop marking its own homework and actually have an independent body that can investigate claims of inappropriate behaviour and make sure that the policies put in place to stop it are being properly implemented because that’s not what’s happening at the moment.”

In another FOI, it was revealed that more than 186 recruits have harmed themselves during basic training.

The revelation comes in the week it emerged that two British Army trainers who had sex with a teenage recruit were jailed and sacked from the army.

Lance Sergeant Antony Pugh, 36, and Sergeant Connor Forgan, 32, bragged to each other about their sexual relationship with a 17-year-old trainee.

A court martial in Bulford, Wiltshire, heard that both men had separate sexual relationships with the recruit, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Pugh and Forgan were instructors at the infantry training centre in Catterick, North Yorkshire, where the crime took place.

They both denied charges of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust but were convicted by a court martial board after a trial last year.

The court heard that Pugh, a member of the Grenadier Guards, and Forgan, who served with the Welsh Guards, were both veterans of the conflict in Afghanistan

Commander Edward Hanna, prosecuting, told the court, “She has decided not to make a personal statement to the victim and wishes to move on from these matters.”

Commander Hanna said both defendants had shown a degree of planning in committing the crimes and were in a position of trust due to their rank.

“The hierarchical structure of the military confers power with rank, especially in a training facility,” he said.

In a separate case, it was announced that two senior officers were facing court-martial for their actions in handling the complaint of a female soldier who took her own life after being sexually assaulted by a superior.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said, “There is no place for bullying, harassment, discrimination or abuse in Defence.

“We actively encourage any personnel who believe they have experienced or witnessed unacceptable behaviour to report it. All allegations of unacceptable behaviour are taken extremely seriously and are thoroughly investigated. If proven, prompt action will be taken.

“We are systematically addressing issues of harassment, discrimination and misconduct through our Raising Our Standards (ROS) programme – which aims to tackle unacceptable behaviours, strengthen complaints processes and foster a culture of respect and accountability.”
