Mikaela Shiffrin wins record sixth overall World Cup skiing title
Shiffrin only needed to finish in the top 15 of the giant slalom and the American standout accomplished it before Eichner started her second run.
The 31-year-old American equalled Austrian downhill legend Annemarie Moser-Pröll, who won six of her titles in the 1970s.
Moser-Pröll won five consecutive titles from 1971 to ’75 and then won a sixth title in 1979. Shiffrin won three consecutive titles from 2017 to ’19, then two consecutive titles in 2022 and ’23.
Lindsey Vonn is third on the women’s list with four titles overall.
Marcel Hirscher leads the men’s list with eight overall titles.
It’s been another outstanding season for Shiffrin.
who claimed her third Olympic gold and started her career by dominating slalom at the Milan Cortina Games.
Shiffrin won nine of the 10 World Cup slaloms this season and set a record of 110 wins across all disciplines – the most wins ever in the World Cup by a man or woman. Ingemar Stenmark is in second place with 86 wins in the 1970s and 80s.
Last month, Shiffrin told CBS News that winning her third Olympic gold medal “feels different.”.
“Each experience has been completely unique,” said the 30-year-old, reflecting on his Olympic career, which now includes a total of four medals.
Shiffrin’s father, Jeff Shiffrin, died unexpectedly in 2020 at the age of 65.
Her victory in the women’s slalom marks the first time Shiffrin has won an Olympic medal after her death.
Shiffrin admitted, “Winning an Olympic medal without them here was scary for me, even before I knew it would happen.” In Beijing, I didn’t know that I was afraid of it.”
