Violence continues in Mexico after the assassination of El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. He died after a military operation last month.
El Mencho was Mexico’s most powerful cartel leader and one of the United States’ most wanted narco fugitives. His death was the biggest blow to the cartel since the capture of former Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman during an attempt to capture him in Jalisco state a decade ago.
Mexican Defence Secretary Ricardo Trevila said the army and National Guard launched an operation in the southern part of Jalisco state to capture El Mencho, involving the Mexican Air Force and special forces. Intelligence gathered about one of El Mencho’s romantic partners led them to his whereabouts, they said.
The cartel retaliated and in the ensuing confrontation federal forces killed eight members of the criminal group. Trevila said that El Mencho and two of his bodyguards were injured and later died while being airlifted to Mexico City.
Rocket launchers capable of shooting down aircraft and destroying armoured vehicles were seized at the scene.
Omar García Harfuch, security secretary in Claudia Sheinbaum’s Mexican government, says there will be “zero leeway” for drug traffickers in the country. Donald Trump has threatened to impose higher taxes if the country does not take steps to stop the supply of drugs from across the border into the US.
Mike Vigil, former head of the DEA’s international operations, said Mexico had “sent a strong message to Donald Trump’s administration that they are fighting aggressively and effectively against the most powerful cartels”. He said of the operation against El Mencho, “Most of the information came from the Mexican Armed Forces and all credit goes to Mexico.”
