Tiger Woods was granted a request by a Florida judge on Wednesday to leave the United States to enter a comprehensive inpatient treatment facility as he faces a misdemeanour charge of driving under the influence, according to court records cited in multiple reports.

Martin County Court Judge Darren Steele granted the travel motion submitted by Woods’ attorney, Douglas Duncan, who cited the 50-year-old golf superstar’s need for an “intensive, highly individualised, and medically integrated program” away from media and public scrutiny.

According to ESPN, Duncan’s motion states, “Based on the defendant’s treating physician, the recommendation for an out-of-country treatment facility is based on the defendant’s complex clinical presentation and urgent need for a level of care that cannot be safely or effectively provided within the United States, as his confidentiality has been repeatedly compromised.”

“Ongoing medical scrutiny and public exposure creates significant barriers to their care and will result in setbacks and an inability to fully engage in treatment.”

The motion comes a day after Woods issued a public statement and pleaded not guilty in a Florida court to misdemeanour charges of causing damage to property and refusing to submit to a urine test following a rollover accident in Jupiter, Florida, last Friday.

Woods told police he was looking at his mobile phone and changing radio stations before his Land Rover struck a truck in front of him, which he did not see slowing down. The arrest affidavit stated that a breathalyser test showed no indication of alcohol, but Woods refused to submit to a urine test for other drugs.

The affidavit states that Woods was “sweating excessively”, his movements were “lethargic and slow”, his eyes were “bloodshot and glassy”, his pupils were “extremely dilated”, and during the field sobriety exercise Woods was “limping and staggering to the right”.

Woods denied consuming alcohol but said he had taken “a few” prescription pills that morning. The names of the medicines were modified in the affidavit. However, another deputy from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office found two hydrocodone pills in Woods’ left pant pocket.

Duncan also represented Woods in May 2017, when he was arrested on a DUI charge in Jupiter Island and ultimately pleaded guilty to reckless driving. He was given one year’s probation with a $250 fine and 50 hours of community service.

In a statement released Tuesday, the 15-time major champion announced he would step away from golf for treatment in hopes of making a “permanent recovery.”

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods’ statement said. “I am taking some time away to receive treatment and focus on my health. It is necessary for me to prioritise my well-being and work toward a lasting recovery.

“I am committed to taking the time needed to return to a healthier, stronger and more centred place personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones, and me at this time.”

Tiger had to lose the role of captaincy

The PGA of America also announced Wednesday that Woods had withdrawn from consideration to serve as U.S. captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup.

“The PGA of America stands in full support of Tiger Woods as he takes steps to focus on his health and well-being,” the organisation said in a statement. “During this time, we are keeping Tiger in our thoughts and prayers for his strength, comfort, and true hope for his recovery…

“We commend Tiger for prioritising his long-term health and deeply respect the courage he had to make such a personal decision. Tiger has shared with us that he will not serve as captain of the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup team and we support his decision. The PGA of America will share further updates regarding the Ryder Cup captaincy when appropriate.”

The presidents of the PGA Tour and Augusta National also offered their support to Woods.

“Tiger Woods is a legend of our game whose impact goes far beyond his accomplishments on the course,” the PGA Tour said in a statement Wednesday. “But above all, Tiger is a human being, and our focus is on his health and well-being. We continue to support Tiger as he takes this important step.”

Augusta National Chairman Frank Ridley also expressed support for Woods.

“Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being,” Ridley said in a statement. “Although Tiger will not be joining us in person next week, his presence will be felt here at Augusta.”
