27-year-old Indian student Sai Teja is fighting for his life after a car accident in Montgomery, Alabama, seriously injured him.
According to reports, a minor driver hit Teja’s car while he was returning from his friend’s graduation ceremony.
His friend Akhil, who was also in the car and suffered minor injuries, set up a fundraiser to help Teja’s family cope with the ordeal.
Sai Teja suffered a severe brain injury, a broken jaw and a broken left leg in the accident and is unconscious in the ICU at Baptist Medical Center South in Alabama.
Sai, originally from Hyderabad, came to the US on a student visa and recently completed his master’s degree from the University of New England. He was seeking employment and had no insurance in the US.
Doctors have explained that recovery from such severe injuries will be a long and uncertain journey.
Even after regaining consciousness, he is expected to require extensive rehabilitation, including neurological care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and medical treatments lasting several months, possibly a year or more,” Akhil wrote for the fundraiser.
“Sateja is an international student with dreams and aspirations for her future in the United States.
Unfortunately, her father and brother are currently in India and are unable to be with her.
A small group of family members and close friends in the US are working together to support her and coordinate her care during this difficult time.
“The fundraiser asked for help with hospital and medical expenses, rehabilitation and therapy costs, specialised medical equipment and care, transportation and recovery-related expenses, and long-term treatment needs.
