Michael Carrick has not ruled out Marcus Rashford returning to Manchester United when asked if the door is open for the forward to play for his boyhood club again. Rashford has spent the season on loan with Barcelona, who have the option to sign him permanently.

Barcelona can sign Rashford on a permanent transfer for £26 million (€30m) after the season ends, but rumblings in Spain suggest that Barca wants to negotiate a lower fee.

United has made it clear that Barcelona must pay the agreed fee of £26m if they wish to sign the forward. However, Carrick has not ruled out including Rashford in his plans should he be given the United job.

When asked if Rashford was still a possibility,

He responded, “I believe that over time, there are decisions to be made, and obviously, Marcus is in that situation.” But currently, nothing has been decided.

And it will happen at a certain point, but at this stage, there is nothing to say.

When asked if it was a matter of keeping options open for the players, Carrick replied: “Yeah, I’m not going to go after Marcus individually, because I think, as I’ve already touched on, it’s too early to comment at this stage, given the uncertainty.”

But for me, as I said, I enjoy working with the individual players in that part of the squad and try to get the best out of them.

Kobi Minno and Harry Maguire have again become key players for United, despite both facing challenging periods at different times, so it was put to Carrick that they were examples of players who showed Rashford could make a comeback.

“Certainly from my perspective, whoever is here, I want to work with him, do the best, and help him improve. Currently, it’s a squad of players, and obviously players are on loan, and whatever happens to him will happen later,” he said.

As a coach and squad leader, I want to get the best out of everyone, for sure.

United want to strengthen the left wing, where Rashford plays.

There are phases to go through during the summer. Carrick discussed the signings, stating, “We need to make decisions.” Timing is one thing and obviously my situation is one thing. So I’m just working through it. We are having natural conversations about it, but I haven’t officially committed to recruiting.

But we have definitely communicated, and it feels quite natural; to be honest, we are not making a big deal out of it. I think it will happen in time anyway.”
