Manchester United’s Hull Defeat Raises Early Concerns
The Manchester United Hull defeat was a disappointing start to the new Premier League season, but one poor performance should not cause panic at Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick’s side suffered a surprising 2-0 loss to newly promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium on Saturday, 22 August. First-half goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy gave Hull a memorable victory in their first top-flight match for nine years.
United controlled 72% of possession but struggled to turn that control into clear opportunities. Their football lacked speed and intensity, while poor defending at set pieces allowed Hull to establish a two-goal lead before half-time.
The result was undoubtedly concerning. Manchester United entered the season with renewed optimism after strengthening their midfield and finishing the previous campaign strongly under Carrick.
However, there are several reasons why supporters should avoid judging the team’s entire season on one match. Fitness problems, limited preparation and a newly formed midfield all contributed to the performance. Carrick has also already shown that he can produce results over a longer period.
What Happened Against Hull City?
Hull produced the energy and aggression expected from a newly promoted team playing its first Premier League match in almost a decade.
The atmosphere inside the MKM Stadium gave the home players additional motivation. Hull pressed United, competed strongly for loose balls and looked more dangerous from dead-ball situations.
Their approach produced a deserved lead.
Semi Ajayi scored the opening goal before Nobel Mendy doubled Hull’s advantage during the first half. Both goals exposed problems in United’s set-piece defending.
United had plenty of possession after falling behind but did not use it effectively. The visitors registered 21 attempts, with only five on target, and Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis made several saves.
Much of United’s possession was slow and predictable. Hull were able to defend in numbers, protect the penalty area and challenge United to find a way through.

This does not excuse the performance. Professional players must still defend set pieces properly and compete with greater intensity.
However, physical condition usually improves during the opening weeks of a season. United should become faster and more organised as more playerregain their matchch fitness.
A New Midfield Needs Time to Develop
Carrick selected a new central-midfield partnership of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.
Both players possess considerable ability, but new midfield combinations rarely function perfectly immediately. They must learn each other’s movements, understand when to press and develop a clear division of defensive responsibilities.
Hull took advantage of the lack of coordination by moving the ball quickly and forcing United into uncomfortable situations.
Manchester United have invested more than £150 million in midfield reinforcements, with Carlos Baleba also joining the squad. The investment should provide Carrick with more energy, quality and tactical options.
However, signing talented individuals does not instantly create an effective unit.
The players will require training sessions and competitive matches to develop the necessary understanding. Carrick must also decide which combination offers the best balance between creativity, possession and defensive protection.
Carrick’s Previous Record Deserves Respect
The strongest reason not to panic is Carrick’s record since taking charge.
When he replaced Ruben Amorim in January, Manchester United were struggling in the middle of the Premier League table. Carrick improved the team’s confidence, attacking play and results.
United collected 39 points from Carrick’s first 17 league matches, more than any other Premier League club over the same period. That run helped them recover and finish third.

The defeat should be viewed as an early warning rather than proof that United’s entire project is failing.
Set-Piece Defending Must Improve Quickly
Although there is no need for panic, United cannot ignore the way they defended.
Hull manager Sergej Jakirović said his coaching staff had identified a weakness in United’s set-piece organisation before the game. His team successfully exploited it twice.
Players appeared uncertain about their marking responsibilities, while Hull were stronger and more aggressive when attacking the ball.
Bruno Fernandes admitted afterwards that the team had repeated mistakes from the previous season. He called for United to press more aggressively and improve their work at set pieces.
Set-piece problems are often easier to correct than wider structural weaknesses. Carrick and his coaching staff can review the positioning, change marking assignments and improve communication through training.
However, the problem must be addressed immediately. Premier League opponents will study Hull’s approach and attempt to exploit the same weakness.
If United continue conceding similar goals, the Hull defeat will begin to look less like an isolated incident and more like a damaging pattern.
Possession Must Become More Productive
United’s 72% share of possession may appear impressive, but it did not produce enough meaningful attacking opportunities.
Carrick’s team often moved the ball safely without breaking Hull’s defensive structure. Centre-back Harry Maguire became one of United’s more noticeable attacking outlets, illustrating how little creativity was coming from other areas.
Bryan Mbeumo forced Tzolakis into a save, while Rashford showed occasional signs of sharpness after coming on.

This improvement should come as the new midfield develops and attacking players regain fitness. Even so, Carrick must ensure that his team plays with greater purpose in the next match.
Marcus Rashford’s Return Provides Another Option
One positive from the match was the return of Marcus Rashford.
The forward made his first Manchester United appearance since December 2024 following loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona.
Rashford did not transform the game, but he displayed occasional flashes of speed. His return gives Carrick another experienced attacking option as United attempt to improve their goal threat.
The challenge will be finding the best role for him.
Rashford is most effective when he can run into space, while Hull spent much of the second half defending close to their penalty area. United did not move the ball quickly enough to create the situations in which he usually performs best.
With greater fitness and improved service, Rashford could still make a meaningful contribution during the season.
Does Carrick Have a Problem Against Back-Five Systems?
Some supporters have argued that Carrick’s team struggles against opponents using a back five.
Four of United’s five defeats under Carrick have reportedly come against teams using that defensive structure. However, this statistic requires context.
Two of those losses occurred during pre-season, including matches against Wrexham and AC Milan. Pre-season games are designed to build fitness and test ideas, so their results should not carry the same importance as competitive fixtures.
There were similarities between the Hull performance and United’s poor display against Leeds during the previous season. In both matches, United lacked physical sharpness and struggled to break down an organised opponent.
Carrick must develop better solutions against compact defences, but there is still not enough evidence to say that one formation has permanently exposed his tactical approach.
Further Transfer Business Could Help
Manchester United have strengthened their midfield, but the defeat highlighted weaknesses elsewhere in the squad.
Left-back remains an area of concern. Luke Shaw faces considerable pressure to remain fit, while Patrick Dorgu is still developing. Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot can also play in the position, although it is not necessarily their strongest role.
United have reportedly admired Myles Lewis-Skelly and Lewis Hall, but neither appears likely to be available during the current transfer window.
The club could look for a short-term alternative, but it may prefer to wait until a leading target becomes available.
That approach carries risk. Injuries or poor form could leave Carrick without the defensive balance he needs.
Nevertheless, making an expensive panic signing after one defeat would not automatically solve the problem. United must decide whether a suitable player is available rather than purchasing someone simply to respond to supporter pressure.

Carrick may also be able to give additional minutes to players who were not fully fit for the opening match.
However, Ipswich are another newly promoted side and will have seen how effectively Hull frustrated United. They are likely to defend with discipline and attempt to create opportunities from transitions and set pieces.
United cannot assume that playing at Old Trafford will guarantee victory.
