Gianni Infantino – 10 years as FIFA president

Despite the controversies, one fact remains: Infantino has no meaningful opposition.

While the 55-year-old may face criticism in Europe, for the rest of the world he has made a clear difference. Yes, it’s about money. But money for football.

They have enriched some of the poorest and smallest football nations by providing funding through infrastructure and development.

Infantino has stuck to his word that FIFA will be transparent.

publishing the salaries of all top officials and keeping the money within football.

The Swiss fulfilled their initial promise of an additional $5 million (£3.7 million) for each national association and $40 million (£29.7 million) for each confederation over the first four years.

In the first two cycles of the FIFA Forward project until 2022, $2.8 billion (£2.08 billion) was made available for investment across 211 member associations on more than 1,600 projects.

FIFA forward 3.0, external – Funding is increased by 30% – covering the years from 2023 to 2026.

Infantino provided an additional $5 million (£3.7 million) for each member association, with each confederation paying an additional $60 million (£44.48 million) for their projects.

After being re-elected unopposed in 2019 and 2023, he is approaching another election year in 2027.

Infantino would be able to stand again, even though FIFA’s statutes limit presidents to a maximum of three terms.

In 2022, the governance, audit, and compliance committee ruled that his first term would not count, as it was only for three years.

Given the way Infantino has improved the financial situation of so many unions, it is difficult to see how anyone can realistically challenge him in 2027.

Nearly half of the 2011 vote went to Asia and Africa – two regions that have benefited from huge financial growth.

Infantino can be criticised for the way he has expanded the Club World Cup and the World Cup and for the increased ticket prices.

But he sees it to increase investment in sports around the world.

And that vote is the winner.
